The event, held in Seoul, was addressed to all healthcare professionals, doctors and scientists from several fields of health and was organized to unveil the latest applications and the science behind this blockbuster ingredient. Indeed the regulatory process of Quatrefolic® as food additive in South Korean market has been positively concluded.
The audience of the conference reserved a warm welcome and enthusiastic feedback for the potential opportunity showed by Paolo Malesani who said: “Quatrefolic® is the glucosamine salt of the biologically active form of folate, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), and doesn’t need to be metabolized by the body. Its supplementation may benefit all people, including those with the polymorphism of the enzyme methyltetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) that reduces the physiological availability of 5-MTHF.
These people may still be gravely folate-deficient even if they introduce folic acid, with increased risk in pregnancy and in other human diseases.” Korean population shows a high incidence of this polymorphism, around 40% for the homozygous form. (Wong Sull et al., 2004).
This event is part of Gnosis by Lesaffre’s ongoing education plan committed to deepening, informing, and sharing its knowledge on Quatrefolic® pointing out the latest scientific highlights and benefiting people through right and effective folate supplementation.
The success gained reveals how the scientific community is already aware of the stringent role of MTHFR polymorphism in right folate availability and of the debate about Unmetabolized Folic Acid (UMFA), probably linked with several human disorders.
